The program of the 13th edition of Alice nella città, the independent and parallel section of the Rome Film Fest dedicated to young adults and families which will take place from October 16th to 24th 2015, will offer 13 films in Compeitition, 3 films Out of Competition and 4 special events held at the wonderful venues of Auditorium Parco della Musica. In its 2015 edition, Alice nella città takes a new step forward by expanding its program with Alice / Panorama section, bringing the best of world cinema to the streets of Rome, pursuing the desire to make moviegoing experience more accessible to the public. In addition to the Auditorium Parco della Musica, we created a “cinema district" in the colorful Pigneto area where will be screened the 10 Alice/ Panorama movies in Cinema Avorio and the second screenings of the Rome Film Festival as well in Nuovo Cinema Aquila. Cinema Avorio is one of the most unique historical halls of Rome which was closed in 2009 and will reopen temporarily especially for the festival, thanks to close cooperation between Alice nella città and the property owners. "Cinema is certainly the most popular of the arts, for its ability to excite the masses, enhances sensibility in bridging different cultures," said the Head of Culture and Sport Giovanna Marinelli. "This year, Alice nella città confirms the quality of its premise, reaching out to an even wider audience - including children, teens and adults, rooted in one of the most multicultural quarter of Rome: with the help of the Film Festival, Pigneto becomes more and more a cultural and innovative neighborhood, open to the community and integration. The commitment of department of Culture is increasingly adapting program for both girls and boys, expanding its scope on all sectors of art: from museums to cinema and theater."
The new theme of the 2015 edition of Alice nella città is directed by Fabio Mollo who premiered his own debut The south is Nothing at the festival in 2013." Youth is Timeless is the theme behind the trailer of Alice in the city” – said the director Fabio Mollo. A short trip through the fragments of home movies which 20 year olds of today, expressing their point of view on reality with magic of youth. The passing of time, change of generations, alternating modes and hairstyles, the film switches from VHS to digital, but what remains intact is the joy of adolescents.
Taodue Camera d’Oro Award of Alice in the City for Debut films
The award for best debut film in the program of Alice and the City (Young Adult and Alice/Panorama) will be given by a skillful jury of filmmakers which will include actor Michele Riondino.
Alice in the City Competition
13 international films in Young Adult competition, voted by a jury made of 22 boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 18. This year, the selection includes: Departure by Andrew Steggall from England; From Turkey, Mustang directed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, successfully presented at the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes Film Festival and recently chosen for France’s entry in the category of Best Foreign Film at the Oscars; Norway participates with Returning Home directed by Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken; from the United States we will host Scout Laurie Weltz with India Ennenga, James Frecheville, Nikki Reed (the Twilight Saga) Tim Guinee, Shelley Hennig and Danny Glover. Grandma, comedy written and directed by Paul Weitz (About a Boy) with Lily Tomlin (Nashville , Shadows and Fog, America today), Julia Garner, Marcia Gay Harden, and Jack of the Red Hearts directed by Janet Grillo; from France we have The Big Day by Pascal Plisson (developed from the success of his previous documentary On the Way to School), Microbe & Gasoline directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep) with Ange Dargent, Théophile Baquet, Diane Besnier, Audrey Tautou and A childhood by Philippe Claudel, presented in collaboration with the Rome Film Festival; From Germany arrives Four Kings of Theresa von Eltz and from India The New Classmate by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. Italy is represented by Vetro’s child directed by Federico Cruciani. The 13th film in competition in collaboration with the Rome Film Festival, will be announced in the coming days.
Alice / Panorama
10 films will be presented at the Cinema Avorio in Pigneto district and are part of the expanded program of Alice in the city, called Panorama. These films, unlike the competition Young Adult, will tell the story of young generation’s world, addressing the issues of adolescence and youth with a rather more matured language. On October 16th, at 20:00, we will inaugurate the program of Avorio cinema with The Wolfpack by Crystal Moselle, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and Street Opera by Haider Rashid with actors Clementino, Guè Pequeno, Danno, Tormento and Elio Germano, lead rapper of Bestierare which will honor us with their presence, enriching us all with their live performance. Other films in Alice / Panorama: Raging Rose by Julia Kowalski, produced by Valerie Donzelli, Monitor directed by Alessio Lauria and made for the web, with Michele Alhaique, Valeria Bilello, Riccardo De Filippis and Claudio Gioé; Long Way North by Rémi Chayé; Sleeping Giant by Andrew Cividino, successfully presented at the Critics' Week in Cannes Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival; Closet Monster directed by Stephen Dunn; The Boy and the Beast by master Mamoru Hosoda (Summer words, Wolf children); Colombian film Alias Maria by Josè Luis Regules and The New Kid by Rudi Rosenberg. In view of the forthcoming reopening of the Nuovo Cinema Aquila and in collaboration with the 5th district municipality and the City of Rome we will celebrate the program of Alice in the city with the reinauguration festivities of the cinema.
Films Out of Competition
In world premiere which will take place on October 18th, lands on the red carpet of Alice in the City Out of Competition, Belle and Sebastien - the Adventure Continues directed by Christian Duguay, the second chapter of the saga with Belle, the dog of the Pyrenees, former star of not only the renowed cartoon but also the blockbuster film Belle and Sebastien, released in 2014. Other title presented in Alice and the City, in collaboration with the Rome Film Fest is The Little Prince film adaptation of the classic children's literature of Antoine de Saint-Exupery directed by Mark Osborne (Kung Fu Panda) with the voices of Italy’s Toni Servillo, Paola Cortellesi, Stefano Accorsi, Micaela Ramazzotti, Alessandro Gassman, Giuseppe Battiston, Pif and Alessandro Siani. Last title out of competition is the Italian-French co-production Iqbal: tale of a fearless child, mixed media cartoon and designed 3D scenes, directed by Michel Fuzellier & Babak Payami. The film is the linchpin of a larger cross-media project on issues of child labor and de-schooling of children, in partnership with national and international institutions such as UNICEF, Almed Foundation and Banca Etica.
In the first weekend, we will celebrate the Italian Premiere of Pan directed by Joe Wright, starring Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and Rooney Mara. The film is a new version of Peter Pan story to be presented at the Auditorium Parco della Musica on Sunday, the 18th. On October 21st another big premiere will hit the red carpet of Alice in the city, out of competition: Game Therapy directed by Ryan Travis. Game Therapy is the action-fantasy movie starring Favij, Federico Clapis, Leonardo Decarli and Zoda, four famous Italian Internet celebrities who make their debut performance on the big screen in the film. Joining them also on the red carpet of the Auditorium Parco della Musica are 40 Italian youtubers. Among the screenings and special events on the 20th and only a few days before the commemoration of World Food Day in Expo 2015, there will be a special screening of Costanza Quatriglio’s short film The Zero Hunger Challenge dedicated to the theme of the United Nations for Expo Milano 2015 Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world, Emergency will be screened also in Pigneto after last year’s collaborative activity which involves students of junior and senior high schools on the subject in a morning event and an evening open to the public in which the audience will propose a debate around the themes of the Association starting from ideas for a movie, followed by a musical interlude.
The closing film of the festival screened after the awards ceremony will be a new 2k digital version of Alice in the Cities by Wim Wenders, not only paying tribute to the renowned film director but also celebrating the festival’s title, taken from this 74’ cinematic gem.
Alice in the City, curated by Gianluca Giannelli and Fabia Bettini, is supported by the General Management for Cinema of Mibact, the Lazio Region municipality by the Capital of Rome, the ACEA Rome Chamber of Commerce and BNL Gruppo BNP Paribas.
